THINGS TO KNOW
Q: WHAT MAKES Sail Honu HAWAII DIFFERENT THAN OTHER SAILING CHARTERS IN HAWAII?
A: The boat, the crew, and our ability to provide an intimate and interactive experience for our guests.
Our boat is a USCG documented high performance trimaran. Originally designed for racing, our boat is capable of speeds over 25 mph (a typical sailboat rarely moves faster than 9 mph). We pride ourselves in having one of the fastest sailboats in the Hawaiian Islands.
Each cruise sets out with a Captain and Mate to guide your excursion. All crew have extensive sailing experience in a variety of boats and places.
We cater to our guests. The more information you give us, the better we can serve you. Please fill out the questionnaire at check-out so we can better customize your excursion to give you the best experience possible.
Q: WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
A: Sunglasses, clothes/swimwear that can get wet, and a hat that won’t get blown off. We also recommend bringing a jacket in case of rain or a cool breeze. We have storage in the cabin for your day bag or anything else you want to keep dry.
Q: CAN I BRING MY OWN FOOD AND DRINKS?
A: Yes. We do not restrict our passengers from bringing their own food and drinks. We do provide bottled water and soft drinks for our passengers.
Q: DO YOU ACCEPT TIPS?
A: Yes! Tips are greatly appreciated. We accept cash, Venmo, Apple Pay or Cashapp.
Q: what is your cancellation policy?
A: You can cancel without penalty up to 24 hours in advance. If you cancel less than 24 hours in advance or do not show up for your appointment, you will be charged the full cost of your excursion.
Q: WHAT IF THE WEATHER IS CRAP (INCLEMENT WEATHER)?
A: In rare cases there can be no wind (less than 4kts) or severe weather conditions (sustained winds of 25kts or greater), neither of which are enjoyable for sailing. If that is the case, we offer a full refund and will help you reschedule your excursion. You must show up for your excursion unless you have communicated with a representative.
Q: Will I get seasick?
A: There is always a chance. Our trimaran does ride smoother than a catamaran and heels less than a monohull but that doesn’t mean the sensation of being on the water is gone. We recommend if you are worried about seasickness, taking something the night before and 2hrs prior to your trip.
Q: WHAT IS PROVIDED?
A: The following are always complimentary: Bottled water, soft drinks, reef safe sunscreen, and life vests.
Q: WILL I GET WET?
A: Plan on it. Whether it’s just an ocean spray or a rogue wave that the boat punches through, you won’t come back as dry as you left. Make sure to wear clothing that can get wet. We can store anything you would like to keep dry in the cabin.
Q: IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE?
A: The minimum age is 11. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. All children 12 years and under must wear a life vest, which we provide, for the duration of the trip (coast guard requirement). Exceptions for younger children can be made on a case-by-case basis for children with experience on the water; must be approved in advance (call us at 808-476-3731).
Q: WILL I SEE SEA LIFE?
A: We frequently come across sea turtles, dolphins, humpback whales (December - March) and flying fish. If you snorkel on our Sail and Swim or on one of our private excursions, then you will see a variety of underwater sea life which may also include tropical fish, coral, manta rays, more sea turtles, eels, octopus, coral, etc.).
Q: IS THERE A BATHROOM ABOARD?
A: Yes. There is an enclosed bathroom in the main cabin.
Q: HOW PHYSICALLY CHALLENGING ARE YOUR EXCURSIONS?
A: You should generally be fit enough to access the boat with minimum help. You should be able to pull yourself up the boat ladder unassisted on the sail swim trip.
